H Abdur Raqeeb, General Secretary of Indian Centre for Islamic Finance, Convener, National Committee on Islamic Banking and has been promoting the concept of interest-free banking throughout India.

Was Born in Vaniyambadi, currently stays in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He has done B.Sc in Chemistry, holds a Diploma in Leather Technology and completed M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication

He Hails from Leather Industry of Chennai, a well renowned Leather technologist, Tanner and Exporter of Leather Garments.

Written several articles on technology & trade in leather Industry and received awards from Council for Leather exports & Commerce Ministry for Exports.

Also the Editor of Tamil fortnightly ‘Samarasam’. He was awarded ‘The best Journalist Award’ by Islamiya Tamil Islamic literary organization

Activities related to Islamic Finance and Banking

  • Interacted with Finance Ministers, Governors of RBI, Deputy Governors RBI and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission to introduce the concept of Islamic banking in India.
  • Prepared along with experts a document for Banking Regulations (amendment) Bill to be introduced in Parliament as a private members bill.
  • Prepared a document along with experts for Interest free windows in conventional Banks and submitted to RBI and Finance Ministry.
  • Interacted with High Level committee on Financial Sector Reforms of Planning Commission of India headed by Dr Raghuram Rajan which recommended introduction interest free banking.
  • Represented ICIF and appeared in Kerala High Court against the petition of Dr Swamy and dismissed the case paving the way for first NBFC on Shariah principles in the country.
  • Appeared before the Panel of RBI on Medium term Path on Financial Inclusion and pleaded successfully for introduction of Interest free window in commercial banks.
  • Pleaded the case for introduction of Islamic Insurance -Takaful before the Select Committee on Insurance of parliament.
  • Facilitated Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Forum to file PIL in High Court in March 2018 demanding to Open an Interest free windows in all J&K branches across India.
  • Highlighted in media –need and relevance of Islamic Finance and Banking and written several articles in both national and international medias
  • He visited many countries to study the working methodology of Islamic banks and led a delegation of businessmen from Chennai to Malaysia.
